Cincinnati Art Museum opens Terracotta Army exhibit Friday

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - The Cincinnati Art Museum kicks off a major exhibit that's a blend of art and history. It's the first time you'll be able to see “Terracotta Warriors”, unearthed in a remote area of china after 2,200 years. You have probably seen pictures of Emperor Gin's Terracotta Army. The pictures are powerful, but nothing like standing face-to-face with one of Gin's generals. “This exhibition is the first time that Cincinnati has ever had the Terracotta Warriors in our city. So, it's so cool to be able to see them in person,” said Cincinnati Art Museum Director of Marketing and Communications Jill Dunne. “So, you're able to feel like you're looking at a general from 2,000 years ago right in his eyes. It's pretty amazing.” The generals are life-size, and a little bigger than the other soldiers, but each one is unique. There are archers, some kneeling, some standing along with infantrymen and cavalrymen. All are a long way from home and bivouacked at the Cincinnati Art Museum until August and they will be ready for your inspection soon. These terracotta soldiers, 8,000 strong, were buried with china's first emperor to protect him in the afterlife. The Terracotta Army was unknown to the world until 1974 when some farmers discovered them. 10 of the warriors are now in Cincinnati on display. Along with the figures are artifacts from the emperor's mausoleum. The coins, jewelry, bells and tools of the dynasty that created what is now called China. “Well it is the biggest archaeological discovery of the 20th century. And it's not just about one dynasty of Chinese history even though it is the most important dynasty because the English word for China is derived from the name of this dynasty,” said Cincinnati Art Museum Curator of East Asian Art Dr. Hou Mei Sung.
