Actor Mark Ruffalo sparks backlash by comparing conservative policy plan Project 2025 to Sharia law

Actor Mark Ruffalo sparked a backlash on X, formerly Twitter, after he posted a statement on Tuesday comparing Project 2025, a controversial conservative policy plan, to Islam’s Sharia law. Hundreds of users on X accused the actor of Islamophobia for using Islamic terms to describe the policy plan. Project 2025, developed by conservative think tank The Heritage Foundation, is a document of more than 900 pages detailing controversial policy changes that could be implemented if Donald Trump wins the 2024 presidential election. It calls for reducing climate change regulations, adding further restrictions to abortion, removing laws protecting minorities from discrimination, ending programs aimed at improving diversity and inclusion in American society, and more. Critics have described the plan as “extremist” and “nationalist”. Some users highlighted their disappointment in Ruffalo, who had previously spoken out against Israel’s war on Gaza and called for a ceasefire at the Directors Guild of America Awards earlier this year.
