The most commonly used technique for adding virtual backgrounds to live action foregrounds is still greenscreens or bluescreens today. Greenscreens are a tried and true technique that allows for simpler occlusion of foreground elements so that a CG environments or a previously shot live action background can be added later in post production. The concept behind this is simple. Anywhere there is green or blue in the image can be keyed out and replaced with a different generated image or video during the post-production VFX process. The key is to have a consistent and easily distinguishable background color that can be removed with visual effects… allowing for creative and realistic scene compositions. LED Volumes have their fair share of advantages and disadvantages as well. But having a real-time interaction with the actors in the scene isn’t one of them. Rather than adding the background environment in post production…LED volumes allow you to have the environment shown in camera. If you are new to the idea of an LED volume ….. here’s a quick overview. Led volumes come in a variety of shapes and sizes….but in general they work like this… LED volumes refer to virtual production environments where large LED screens surround a set or actors, creating realistic backgrounds in real-time. This technology, popularized by productions like "The Mandalorian," allows filmmakers to capture scenes with dynamic and interactive backgrounds, enhancing the visual storytelling process. Notes: 3D CGI and visual effects compositing is about utilizing different visual data effectively to combine elements in the scene to create a seamless composite. This data often includes the live action shot, 2d stock elements such as smoke and fire, and any added or reconstructed 3d elements. When it comes to the 3d elements adding or recreating a scene we often render out multiple passes and layers to have more control in the final compositing process. These include data passes such as diffuse, glossy direct, Emission, mist passes, shadows, Ambient Occlusion, and more! We often render out these passes on a Multilayer OpenEXR file format so that we can access all of them individually without having to use multiple image sequences…streamlining our compositing process
