THIS VIDEO: HOW TO MAKE A SENSORY BOX FOR LESS THAN $20! // The importance and purpose of using a sensory bin in speech/language therapy at home: Improve: Joint Attention / Engagement / Social Interactions / Eye contact / Fine Motor / Imitation Skills / Sounds (onomatopoeias) / Sensory Regulation / Receptive Language Skills / Expressive Language Skills / Pragmatics // Our SENSORY inputs (aka what happens when we use a sensory bin) helps kids process information more efficiently by providing more information using ALL of our senses! (feeling, touching, seeing, smelling, etc!) Step 1) Make your bin! Here are some of my FAVE inexpensive Amazon sensory bin filllers and objects! Household: Bird Seed, Pom Poms, Cotton Balls, Beans, Rice, Dried Noodles, Shredded Paper, Styrofome Peanuts, Jello etc Slime https://amzn.to/2RZTY7l Kinetic Sand https://amzn.to/3dHWjMC Colored Sand https://amzn.to/3dI8Yiq Pom Poms https://amzn.to/3gAPDSe Orbeez: KIDS LOVE THESE! -- Buy Here! https://amzn.to/3aBpCyh Objects: https://amzn.to/3aA1DQ0 Scoopers: https://amzn.to/3vc6heY FAVE: https://amzn.to/3etHWuA Step 2) Begin by using TOOLS (like tweezers/cups/spoons). Encourage your child to TOUCH the fillers using the tools first. THEN once they are use to using a tool, "accidently lose" the tool, so that they need to use their hand! SHOW them it's okay by YOU doing this first! Encourage exploring the texture by putting their FAVORITE toys, objects, minis, and characters into the bin! Tools are important to use in sensory play because it helps with problem solving techniques, improves fine motor skills and helps children discover object functions, which leads to feeding with utensils, brushing hair with hair brush, coloring with markers, etc! Step 3) Choose your target(s)! Whether it's using FUN speech sounds like "ooo" "aahhhh" or expanding words into phrases! You can target ANYTHING with a sensory bin! TEACH NEW WORDS by asking your child to follow a simple (and fun direction) "Find the FISH!" OR improve expressive language by giving them an opportunity to label objects "WOW! What did you find?!" [wait] "YES! FISH! *make fish face and sound. Describe, identify, sort/group objects by color, shape, size, location! Teach WH questions (who, what, when, where, why!) Teach Prepositions! IN / OUT / UNDER / ON TOP! By asking the child WHERE objects are! Describe verbs like SMUSH! DIG! POUR! etc. Create a verbal routine for your child to complete! "Where's the _" "THERE IT IS!" Over and over again! Then let your child fill in the blanks! Step 4) GET MESSY! This is a GREAT opportunity to encourage your child to let their hands be dirty! If your child HAS to have their hands wiped clean when they get dirty, this behavior is often caused by a sensory dysregulation, and it is important to continue to provide opportunities for your child to experience different textures! Step 5) SWITCH IT UP! It is important to have several different sensory bins OR to continually change up the filler or objects in the bin to make it EXCITING! Remember, kids don't want to play when it is boring or toys are overly used, so be sure to switch it up to keep things FRESH and FUN!
