In 1977, she plunged the country into chaos when she declared internal emergency. In 1984, she was gunned down by her own Sikh bodyguards after the infamous 'Operation Bluestar'. She was seen as both a charismatic leader and as an autocrat. To the poor, she was the saviour. To her opponents, she was a dictator. Today, 30 years after her demise, the nation is witnessing the emergence of her granddaughter from the shadows. Priyanka Gandhi's strong campaigns in Raebareli and Amethi have invoked in the Congress party and in the citizens of these two constituencies memories of the matriarch.
