In his youth, John Carson pursued various occupations such as farming, painting, working on railroads, horse racing, and even engaging in moonshining to earn a living. However, it was his musical talent that eventually brought him financial success. Carson once shared with a newspaper reporter that his time in jail was pivotal for him. In 1899, he found himself incarcerated for his involvement in moonshine production alongside his faithful fiddle. Remarkably, his musical abilities caught the attention of the sheriff, who struck a deal with Carson: if he could win a fiddle contest, he would earn his freedom. Carson emerged victorious, securing his release and receiving a fifty-dollar gold piece as his prize. Astoundingly, Carson went on to dominate the same contest for the following eight consecutive years, solidifying his reputation as a remarkable musician.
