He was the royal guru to the Kauravas and the Pandavas, two warring factions in the epic Mahabharata. Drona was a skilled warrior and a brilliant teacher. He trained many of the greatest warriors of the Mahabharata, including Arjuna, Karna, and Bhishma. Drona was born to the sage Bharadwaj. He initially learned under him and then under Parshurama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. From Parshurama he learned the uses of celestial weapons like Bhramastra, Narayanastra, and many more. After completing his training, Drona went to Panchala to seek the help of his childhood friend, King Drupada. However, Drupada had become arrogant and refused to help Drona. Drona was humiliated and vowed to one day avenge himself on Drupada. Drona then went to Hastinapura, the capital of the Kuru kingdom. He offered his services as a teacher to King Bhishma, who was impressed by Drona's knowledge and skills. Bhishma appointed Drona as the royal preceptor to the Kauravas and the Pandavas. Under Drona's tutelage, the Kauravas and the Pandavas became skilled warriors. Arjuna, in particular, excelled in archery and became Drona's favorite student. One day, Drona asked his students to bring him King Drupada's head as their gurudakshina (a traditional repayment to Guru for his teaching). The Kauravas and the Pandavas set out on their mission, but the Pandavas were successful in defeating Drupada and capturing him. Drona forgave Drupada and returned half of his kingdom to him. Drona fought on the side of the Kauravas in the Kurukshetra War. He was a formidable warrior and caused great damage to the Pandava army. However, Drona was eventually killed by Dhrishtadyumna, the son of Drupada. Drona was a complex and controversial figure. He was a skilled warrior and a brilliant teacher, but he was also arrogant and vindictive. Despite his flaws, Drona is one of the most important characters in the Mahabharata.
