Liberi Fatali - Final Fantasy VIII (1999) - NJGSO Spring 2023 Concert

Composed by Nobuo Uematsu Arranged by A.C. Menes Video Editor: Dave Hall Squaresoft certainly knew how to make a strong first impression with Final Fantasy 8 back in 1999. Before the player even reaches the title screen, they are greeted with a hauntingly ethereal choir: “Fithos…Lusec…Wecos…Vinosec” is represented in a Latin-sounding language as an anagram for “Succession of Witches” and “Love.” Both elements are crucial to the game’s story and the imposing nature of this arrangement. From the fast-paced cello that introduces the instrumental section, to the subtle accompaniment from the woodwinds, there is a sense of passion, fear, betrayal, and dread. The choir soon re-enters the scene with a far deeper and more sinister range, channeling a foreboding energy that carries throughout the first half of the piece. Even when the piece shifts to a lighter tone, there is still the sense of uneasiness, as if a battle is approaching. Suddenly, the strings begin to shriek in a strikingly similar fashion to Alfred Hitchcock’s famous film, Psycho. Longtime Final Fantasy fans may find this familiar section echoes the same energy as Uematsu’s famous One-Winged Angel (another NJGSO favorite!). Chaos ensues when the flutes and violins begin descending upon the battlefield with swarming chromatic passages, accompanied by blaring brass. The intensity continues into the grand finale, where the choir once again returns with a dominating presence. It all concludes in one final, graceful note that rings in a final call for hope. #njgso #vgm #orchestra #finalfantasy8 #finalfantasyxiii #nobuouematsu
