A hidden farmhouse that celebrates sky, earth, wind, and water

Mahiravani Farmhouse Architects: Environ Planners Area: 550 m² Year: 2021 City: Nashik Country: India Music from #Uppbeat (free for Creators!): https://uppbeat.io/t/brock-hewitt-sto... License code: QBODE9ILR4BJPU5A In the outskirts of Nashik, a hidden path diverges from the main roads, leading unexpectedly to a dam and a dense cluster of trees. To the uninitiated, it offers no clue about the gem hidden beyond this humble countryside. But for those familiar with the route, it serves as a prelude to a secluded sanctuary, a personal haven for the architect's family. For a newcomer crossing the dam and venturing into the wooded area, it remains ambiguous at best. Eventually, the farmhouse's sloping stone walls emerge, inviting the visitor inside. The ambiance of chirping birds and buzzing bees, the gentle slope of the roof, and the cool touch of terracotta underfoot form a welcoming transition into the courtyard at the heart of the property. The lotus court further entices with its serene atmosphere, while the play of light and shadow on each side of the courtyard weaves a captivating tapestry. The simplicity of the design enhances its impact, blending the roughness of stones with the warmth of terracotta and wood, the sharpness of gravel softened by natural leaves, and the tranquility of water, all contributing to a sense of positivity and harmony. Outside, a tranquil swimming pool seamlessly integrates with the surroundings. The narrative of the farmhouse's evolution traces back to a collection of arches salvaged from an old mansion, preserved by the architect for over two decades. These arches frame the spaces, notable for their lack of formal walls, doors, and windows, fostering a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor areas. Rooted in sustainable architecture and minimalist living, the design reflects local traditions and suits the region's climate. Water recycling features like a harvesting pond connected to percolation pits demonstrate the commitment to environmental stewardship. Solar panels further contribute to energy efficiency. The stone used in construction comes from a quarry dug on-site, while the once barren land now thrives with 5000 trees of medicinal, flowering, and fruit-bearing varieties, creating a vibrant ecosystem. Like a living organism, the farmhouse has evolved over nearly two decades, transitioning from a weekend retreat to a permanent home for the architect's family, embracing a lifestyle in harmony with nature. During this period, the architect acquired the remnants of another dilapidated mansion, incorporating salvaged materials like brackets, beams, and columns into the farmhouse's design, blending modern touches with the original aesthetic. The ethos of Reduce, Recycle, Reuse guided the project, preserving materials from both mansions. Symbolizing the family's values, the farmhouse celebrates nature's elements – sky, earth, wind, and water – while serving as a versatile space for relaxation and entertainment, accommodating all seasons and fostering diverse discussions on art, architecture, and life.
