We wanna keep that. If we get rid of it, we'll lose the elasticity in our shirt. So, roll your shirt up, grab your fabric measuring tape, and measure from the very bottom, right? No, no, no! We’re taking off 3 inches from this shirt and leaving that factory hem on there. We want to measure from the top of the hem. Because of that, I'm going to measure 1 1/2 inches and then put a little sewing pin in there to keep my place. BOOP! Measure that same 1 1/2 inch distance, and for you, it’ll be whatever you're taking off your shirt. Keep placing pins around the bottom. When you're done, make sure your pin placement looks good and even out any wrinkles. We’re gonna sew our stitch right on the edge of our factory hem. Start on one of the side seams, using a narrow zigzag stitch instead of a straight stitch. Straight stitches don’t stretch at all, and we want to maintain the elasticity of that factory hem. The narrow zigzag stitch will do just that. BOOM! Look at that, we've got a nice narrow zigzag stitch, and the factory hem still stretches really well. It’s hard to tell we did anything to this shirt! But we gotta get rid of this flap. I'm gonna use pinking shears, special scissors that cut a zigzag pattern to prevent fraying.
