Next month Spanish! Today we're looking at the Semitic family and if, like me, you learned stories from the bible as a kid, you will be familiar with more of these languages than you might expect (at least by name, that is): Hebrew, Aramiac, Babylonian... In fact, the Semitic languages are closely tied to all three of the book religions. Hebrew of course is the language of Israel, Arabic is the language of the Koran, and Aramaic was the lingua franca around the time of Jesus. In Ethiopia and Eritrea, certain churches that split off in the 5th century over a dispute on the exact nature of Christ, use Semitic languages like Tigrinya (and that's also where the second largest Semitic language by number of speakers can be found today, namely Amharic). Another just as important fact is that our common alphabets can be traced back to scripts that were developed for an ancient Semitic tongue, Phoenician. And that's not even getting into some of the fascinating grammatical features... The books are: Glück/Rödel (ed.): Metzler Lexikon Sprache, 5th edition.
