The Mind of Tyagaraja in Muraliganam 🔸 Dr. M Balamuralikrishna 🔹M Chandrasekaran 🔸C S Murugabhupathy

🌸 “The Mind of Tyagaraja in Muraligānam” is an album, a restored and remastered live concert of Dr. M Balamuralikrishna (BMK), accompanied by Sri. M Chandrasekaran (violin) and Sri. C S Murugabhupathy (mridangam) held somewhere in Tamil Nadu, and in the year 1981. 🌸 The concert’s main contents and the treatment of the renditions center around Saint Tyagaraja and some of his compositions that are addressed to his own mind. These are filled with various emotions Tyagaraja perceives, experiences and expresses his experience of the world. 🌸 BMK with his inimitable approach of exploration, seems to have entered the realm of Tyagaraja’s mind to bring out all the thoughts, perceptions, emotions, ideas, values, and beliefs embedded in these compositions. 🌸Perhaps, this is one of the unique concerts, where BMK brings out some of the kritis that covey the sentiments so touchingly, all in one concert. ❇️ Here is a broad outline of the related krtis of Tyagaraja and how BMK employs them as a means in exploring the feelings of Tyagaraja. 1️⃣ In “Sādhin̄canē ō manasā,” BMK brings out the emotional tone of the way in which Tyagaraja is looking at Rama with consternation, and saying, “O mind! Sri Rama is contradicting the teachings He Himself inculcated for treading the righteous path, has carried out what He wanted to and evaded coming to me, uttering the words as suited to the occasion.” 2️⃣ Tyagaraja’s outpourings of concern form to ask whether there are no good and great men in this world, who could protect the helpless and let Sri Rama know of the distressing trouble which people experience in the ocean of Samsāra? BMK brings out the essence of the wonder of disappointment captured in the raga Siddhasena, created by Tyagaraja himself. The beauty lies in the exposition of the rāga woven into the composition “Evarainaléra peddalu.” 3️⃣ In Sākṣilēdanucu (Baṅgāḷa), BMK portrays quite a complex mix of emotions expressed by Tyagaraja. On the one hand he praises the Lord for his qualities and on the other, he teases him in a playful way. The beauty is in the way how these two emotions are connected. Tyagaraja says, “You being the super natural power of protection, where is the question of You NOT having the power to protect your devotees? Having withdrawn from the worldly sense attractions of desire, etc., I have taken refuge in you. Just because there is no human witness to vouch for my internal withdrawal, O resplendent one, the best among the born in the clan of the all witnessing deity, the Sun God. If you do so, will not onlookers laugh at you?” 4️⃣ In the rendition of “Manasulōni” in the rāga Hindōḷa, BMK captures the essence of Tyagaraja’s thoughts, which can be summarised as, “O my dear Lord, get to know the desire of my heart. I have no other refuge except you. It is not much to your credit that you are the loving Lord, blessed many devotees in the past; now, take me in your hand with compassion.” BMK’s rendition and svara-vinyasam here, certainly pacify the desires of Tyagaraja that are perceived and held within the temple of the body of every keen listener. 5️⃣ In the main item, “Nidhi cala sukhamā”, rāga Kalyāṇi, BMK paints a picture of Tyagaraja’s thoughts on the paradox of choice, in which he says, “Tell me truly O mind of mine, is the joy of gifts and presents more gratifying than the bliss of Rama’s presence which is so satisfying?” BMK in his elaboration of this master piece, brilliantly concludes the detailed rendition with two “muktāyams”, purportedly to indicate the two choices – the immediate pleasing pleasures of the world; and the delayed gratification of peace, echoing the voice of Kathopanishad, “The good and the pleasant come to a man and the thoughtful mind turns around them and distinguishes. The wise choose out the good from the pleasant, but the dull soul chooses the pleasant rather than the getting of his good and its having.” ❇️ BMK also presents a beautiful Tōḍi RTP, followed by several devotional songs before wrapping up the concert with a “ Nīrājanam” of Annamacharya. 00:00 ❇️Welcome to the Album 00:00:10❇️01 - Varṇam - Rāga Rāmapriya - Ādi - BMK 00:09:01❇️02 - Sādhin̄canē ō manasā- Ārabhi- Ādi - Tyagaraja 00:19:39❇️03 - Evarayinā lērā - Sid'dhasēna - Ādi - Tyagaraja 00:26:44❇️04 - Sākṣilēdanucu - Baṅgāḷa - Ādi - Tyagaraja 00:30:23❇️05 - Manasulōni - Hindōḷa - Ādi - Tyagaraja 00:47:15❇️06 - Nidhi cala sukhamā - Kalyāṇi - Miśrā cāpu - Tyagaraja 01:35:52❇️07 - Rāgaṁ Tānaṁ & Pallavi (RTP) - Tōḍi - Triśra jhampē - BMK 02:10:40❇️08 - Navamōhana murārē - Manōrama - Triśra gati Ādi - BMK 02:20:47❇️09 - Tuṅga taraṅgē gaṅgē - Suraṭi - Ādi - Sadashiva Brahmendra 02:25:07❇️10 - Bhajarē guru daivaṁ - Sindhubhairavi - Ādi - BMK 02:29:43❇️11 - Nānāṭi bratuku - Mukhāri - Ādi - Annamacharya 02:34:54❇️12 - Tillana - Rāga Br̥ndāvani - Ādi - BMK 02:37:40❇️13 - Kṣīrābdhi kan'yaku - Śrī rāgaṁ - Ādi - Annamacharya 🌸 Come, partake in the delight of listening to the maestro.
