Unprecedented fires are becoming increasingly devastating as orangutans fight for survival. Last year was the worst fire season since 2019, where an area nearly 15 times the size of Jakarta burned between January and October. Traditional rainy and dry seasons have been increasingly impacted by climate change in the form of scorching weather that results in a prolonged dry season. Peatlands smolder all year long and can ignite at any time. And intentional indiscriminate burning for new plantations goes on unimpeded throughout the year. Orangutans are forced from the forest to escape the fires and find food, but starvation and smoke inhalation are putting endangered orangutans at even greater risk of extinction. If they do escape the burning forest, they are often shot, poisoned or attacked by plantation personnel who see them as marauding pests. Even orangutan rehabilitation and care centers are in the path of the fires jeopardizing hundreds of vulnerable orangutans. It’s clear that the current fire risks require active and ongoing mitigation. Fire brigades that routinely patrol forests all year long to assess conditions and mobilize to fight fires immediately are critical.
