WAPPP & UNCTAD: Opps for “green” levers in port concessions in the context of zero-emission cargo

15 May 2024 joint World Association of PPP Units & Professionals and United Nations Trade and Development (UNCTAD) ROUND TABLE: Opportunities and challenges for “green” levers in port concession PPP bids and agreements in the context of zero-emission cargo handling equipment Governments, port authorities and terminal operators are exploring ways to make ports greener. This is a multi-faceted challenge ranging from deploying electrified equipment for cargo handling, to providing cleaner fuels for bunkering ships but also being a node in the supply chain for clean fuels, and even using port land (and water) for clean power generation. This activity has implications and potential for PPPs in the port sector. This 75 minute event provides an opportunity to discuss the potential new “green” levers in port concession PPPs. The session aims to cover the following areas: i) Short overview of the various aspects of energy transition in the port sector. ii) Focus on a specific aspect, namely electrification of Container Handling Equipment (CHE). iii) Discuss the opportunities and challenges presented by building “green” levers into port concession bids and agreements for zero-emission cargo handling equipment. Speakers include representatives from the World Bank, DP World and the African Development Bank.
