Rebecca Stout does Rhythm and Rhyme as part of her Flat-footing Apprenticeship program with ASPS (Appalachian Step Percussion Services). Rebecca's focus for her Apprenticeship program includes learning and using Rhythm and Rhyme in the development of educational programs and materials for children. Rhythm and Rhyme is a rare Appalachian tradition. It has become quite scarce and is seldom practiced any longer. At one time, musical instruments were few and far between in parts of Appalachia. In place of instruments, people sometimes danced to singing, rhymes and/or other percussive body sounds. No metronome was used in the making of this video and was shot in the Mountains just outside of Spruce Pine, NC.
