Dimmu Borgir, a symphonic black metal band from Jessheim, Norway, was formed in 1993 by Silenoz and Tjodalv. The band's name, inspired by the volcanic formation Dimmuborgir in Iceland, translates to "dark cities" or "dark fortresses." They quickly expanded their lineup to include vocalist Shagrath, bassist Brynjard Tristan, and keyboardist Stian Aarstad. Their early work, marked by the 1994 EP "Inn i evighetens mørke" ("Into the Darkness of Eternity") and their debut album "For All Tid" ("For All Time"), showcased a distinct style that melded intense black metal with symphonic elements.
