biOrb Aquarium | Aquarium gravel vacuum | Essential item!

To see a whole range of video topics relating to biOrbs visit the full video library here:    / stepbystep-biorb-aquariums   After extensive testing, there is ONLY ONE vacuum design (on the market!) that works with biOrb Ceramic Media and Pearl Media! It is easier to use the battery operated version, rather than one that runs off mains electricity. It is available via Amazon (often sold under various branding names, but be assured these all are the very same product, made in China). Note the Amazon links to this product are forever changing. You may need to click on each link below to find one that is currently available... as stocks can become depleted very quickly! But many of these products are not very good at trapping fine waste material. Get the type I use from here: https://amzn.to/400FTov or here:https://amzn.to/3WFqR4Y Video description: BiOrb's ceramic media, whilst very good at maintaining beneficial bacteria, is not the best of substrates to clean and maintain. Many powered aquarium gravel vacuums work very well with sand and fine gravel substrates to reduce aquarium organic waste and to help to maintain good water quality. However, these products are not well suited for biOrbs and nearly all will struggle to extract the waste held within and under the Ceramic Media. Waste from your fish and waste food builds-up under the Ceramic Media. As this waste increases it will become the highest source of your aquarium's water-based pollutants (e.g. nitrate and phosphate). These nutrients will steadily increase over time and will become detrimental to the aquarium's water clarity and the health of your fish. Your water will look less clear and you will start to have issues with green and brown algae. Many sensitive fish are likely to start falling ill and have a very short life expectancy. A point will be reached where even undertaking large water changes seems to make little difference in helping you to reduce the levels of pollutants within your water. One way to remove the waste is to periodically (say every two to three months) remove all the Ceramic Media from the biOrb. Once removed, the ceramic media then can be rinsed in aquarium water and then returned to the tank to ensure no harm to the beneficial bacteria it contains. The physical removal of the gravel media from the tank also releases much of the trapped waste - which then rises in the water column. If left alone for 10 minutes, it slowly sinks back to the bottom where it can then be removed with the aid of a water syphon. Put simply, this is not the most appealing of the maintenance you will need to undertake to maintain a healthy aquarium! This Step-by-Step video tests two vacuum products in order to establish if these tools can be adapted to work in a way to help extract waste material held under a biOrb's Ceramic Media. Gravel vacs act as a siphon to remove detritus and other organic waste from the substrate of the aquarium. They are also great for removing tank water during water changes. I find it best to do this as two operations. First use the vac, with the filter bag attached, to clean under the ceramic media. Following that, attach a hose to the vac and use the vac to extract the water needed for the water change (normally 1/3rd of the aquariums water either weekly or every two weeks). Following extensive use I can seriously say that vacs are one of the most important tools needed to have healthy fish and a clean biOrb! I would go as far as saying that you shouldn't own a biOrb aquarium without owning a gravel vacuum! Products and how to use: If you want to own a biOrb I suggest that you do really need to also have a vacuum! So much so that I'm really surprised biOrb don't make them! Some vacs already come with a short hose for doing water changes (these products are ideal for 15L biOrbs) but with larger biOrbs you will need to attach a longer (flexible) water hose that correctly fits the vac. I have only found one style of aquarium vac that works with biOrb ceramic media. The majority don't! The "Hydro-Vac" tested is sold under different product names. They are all the same! Not all are supplied with a hose - so get one with a hose!). If you are using a vac weekly you might find it better, in the longer term, to use rechargeable batteries. I have been using one of these chargers and batteries for over a year and it works great: https://amzn.to/3Nl0RrR Most Amazon products are available on next day delivery. As always, a big fishy thanks for watching!
