Since the Boer goat arrived in the US in 1993, the American Boer Goat Association, which has offices in San Angelo, Texas, has served as the leading registry. The first ABGA Board of Directors had the creation of a program to honor the best of the best as one of its main objectives. Ennobled Herdbook policies and procedures were created in 1995 and authorized in 1996. The current standards and processes for the Ennobled Herdbook were developed over the course of another two years by several committees and subsequent boards. Breeders from South Africa validated the program's value and provided suggestions for its development. Breeders can see definitions of the breed standards approved by the American Boer Goat Association in the animals that successfully register in the Ennobled Herdbook. The goal of the Ennoblement program is to give the Boer goat a direction and a motivation for continued development and growth. The following requirements must be met or exceeded by a fullblood or purebred Boer goat in order to earn the honorific title of "Ennobled": A Boer goat must pass a visual inspection to meet breed criteria and receive a total of eighty points, thirty of which must be obtained by adding the points from three or more of his or her offspring who have also passed the visual inspection. When at least three of these offspring have accrued a cumulative total of one hundred points and those offspring have passed visual inspection, as verified by the ABGA Secretary, non-inspected Boer goats may obtain Ennobled status through their progeny. The American Boer Goat Association-approved performance exams and the show ring are two ways to gain these points. As more animals meet the criteria, the ABGA will announce each entrance into the Ennobled Herdbook.
