Planning a hike takes time and attention to detail but having a basic kit packed and ready to go is a great way to reduce a lot of the guesswork. Here are the key items that will cover the 10 essentials for just about any day hiking adventure. This list is meant to be a supportive guide to packing and preparing for an afternoon trip into the backcountry. It is not intended to be a fully comprehensive list. If you're planning an overnight backpacking trip you'll need to add a headlamp, sleep system, and cook system to the list. Items left out of this list intentionally: flashlight or headlamp. With everyone carrying a cell phone, we now have flashlights readily available.
