Featuring the cast of the National Youth Music Theatre, this film was shot on location in a replica First World War trench near Gatwick Airport. The song tells the story of a young lad named Billy, a keen whistler, who befriends the birds with his song, and goes off to fight in the Great War. Sadly, the one whistle that he should have recognised was that of the shell that ultimately kills him, and the whistling birds in Picardy had lost their greatest friend. "But when the night draws in, and when the air begins to freeze, if you hold your breath and listen, you'll hear his whistle on the breeze."
