All these words are things which Legend, a somewhat obscure SNES fantasy themed brawler, is most definitely not. The developers, Arcade Zone, were also responsible for Iron Commando, a somewhat janky sideways scrolling brawler that was actually surprisingly fun. Legend is pretty much same, albeit swapping contemporary settings for medieval fantasy, This clearly fancied itself a rival to Knights of the Round, but despite some reasonable graphics, this is nowhere near as fun as any of Capcom's fighting games. Unfortunately, Legend's principle crime is that it's BORING. The combat is dull, tedious and repetitive - you simply execute the same sequence of moves over and over again, knocking over a near-endless procession of palette swapped footpads and brigands. Your beefcake hero's animation cycle is so slow and telegraphed that enemies have no problem sneaking up behind you during execution, having plenty of time to stick several inches of cold steel between your shoulder blades. If only the developers had simply speeded up all of the player animations, the combat might have actually been fun. With a bit more time in the game development oven, I think this could have turned out to be pretty decent. As it is, this plodding snooze-fest is unlikely to win any admirers.
