VIOLETTE VERDY, one of the world's great Prima Ballerinas, began her career with Les Ballets de Paris, and danced with the London Festival Ballet, La Scala, Milan, and the American Ballet Theatre. She spent most of her career as a principal dancer in the New York City Ballet. George Balanchine created many roles for her, including Emeralds, Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux, La Source and Sonatine. After retirement from NYCB, Violette served as Director of the Paris Opera Ballet and Co- Director of the Boston Ballet. In recognition of her influence in world ballet, Miss Verdy was awarded the prestigious French Legion of Honour. The photobook journal, 'Stars of American Ballet' features Violette and depicts the creation of a new ballet company that features Violette and Helgi Tomasson on the first tour of South Africa and years later appearing in her final performance with Stars of American Ballet.
