I’M SO GLAD :: Eric Clapton GUITAR SOLO :: Lesson 2 of 2 :: Cream :: Studio Version

This is the second tutorial for the guitar parts in Cream’s studio recording of “I’m So Glad”, which was written by the famous Delta bluesman, Skip James. The track appeared on the band's 1966 debut album, 'Fresh Cream'. Here, we are going to look at Eric Clapton’s guitar solo. It is very unusual in that it is played on the G string alone. It is a masterclass in controlled string bending and vibrato. The solo has been broken down into eight phrases. I recommend taking your time and working diligently on each phrase. Pay particular attention to the accuracy of your string bending. With just one exception, the solo is played entirely with downstrokes, although you must please excuse and ignore the fact that when I show that section slowly I forget to do an upstroke. It is, however, an easy mistake to make when the passage is being played at that pace, and, when done up to speed, the need for an upstroke is obvious. The left hand has to do a lot of hammer-ons and pull-offs to get many notes from a single stroke of the pick. Getting them all clear and audible is easier to do when playing up to speed and with some volume and sustain. There are several instances when it would be beneficial to be able to play the solo close to a cranked Marshall amp, to enjoy the feedback that such an arrangement creates. I hope you enjoy and can get something to help your playing from the video. Thanks for watching. Enjoy your guitar! Mark
