Jany Deng: Arizona Lost Boys Center Jany Deng was only seven years old when his village was struck by a bomb and he found himself caught in the midst of a violent civil war in 1983. Jany was one of thousands of young boys who fled Southern Sudan and walked almost one thousand miles in search of refugee camps in Ethiopia and Kenya — it is estimated that only one out of three survived the treacherous journey across the vast barren desert. Jany was amongst the first Lost Boys of Sudan to be resettled in the US, and overcame intense cultural challenges to find success in his newly adopted home. Ever optimistic, Jany and the Arizona Lost Boys Center is dedicated to helping his Sudanese brothers and sisters become successful members of their new community and cope with post traumatic stress disorder. Jany believes that we should all strive to understand and embrace our differences. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxPhoenix, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxPhoenix event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.
