"The Marvelettes The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game" Mono/Stereo versions "Women Of Motown"

"Smokey Robinson and the Fascinating Saga of the Motown Hit That Almost Wasn't" "It was 1966 and the Marvelettes were riding high in popularity, in thanks to their recent smash hit, "Don't Mess With Bill." That song came from the fertile imagination of William Smokey Robinson, who recalled that he was alone in believing that song would become a hit. In the booklet that accompanies the 2-CD set The Marvelettes Deliver: The Singles 1961-1971, Robinson recalled that he had to fight (no doubt, during one of Motown's Quality Control meetings) for the record to be released. Motown may have failed to see the hit potential of the record because it so radically marked the ever-maturing journey of the Marvelettes. "Don't Mess With Bill" ended up revitalizing the Marvelettes' career in huge fashion; it was everywhere and even today is one the group's signature hits. So when it came time for Smokey to submit a follow-up song, you'd think he'd have an easy road to travel. But you'd be wrong. There is a song called "True Love Travels on a Gravel Road" by Duane Dee (later covered by Elvis and Percy Sledge); the title could be slightly changed to "A Hit Record Travels on a Gravel Road" and applied directly to the Marvelettes' next record, "The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game." Smokey recalled: "That was another record I had to absolutely beat my brains out for, fight for them to release. They told me it was a little too jazzy for the Marvelettes, but I didn't agree with that." Katherine Anderson had an even stronger opinion on why Motown seemed to be oddly stalling on the record as she related to author Marc Taylor in the book "The Original Marvelettes: Motown's Mystery Girl Group" "Doesn't it seem that it doesn't really make a whole lot of sense? What was going to take 'Hunter's' place? Who had the product that would've been better than his [Smokey Robinson] product?" Anderson continued: "[Motown] didn't want us to grow up. We were becoming adults and perhaps Smokey was the only one who could see that...and decided to give us adult-type songs. Our fans were becoming adults, too, so we couldn't remain teeny-boppers for the rest of our lives. Thank God, Smokey had enough foresight. He had matured and grown up and he just took us along." After the dust from Smokey's battles had cleared, in December of '67, Quality Control released "The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game" along with another soon-to-be hit, Marvin Gaye's and Kim Weston's "It Takes Two," as well as records by Earl Van Dyke & The Motown Brass, "6 By 6," and one by Motown's male backing vocalist, The Originals, "Goodnight Irene." The Marvelettes would emerge with yet another Top 20 hit. The song peaked at #13 on Billboard's Pop chart on March 18 of 1967 and made it to #2 on the R&B chart. To put the performance of the record into context, consider that on this date, The Beatles were at number 1 with "Penny Lane;" The Turtles were at number 2 with "Happy Together." Motown label mates, The Supremes were at #4 with "Love Is Here and Now You're Gone." Other hits/chart positions on this date: #5 Ruby Tuesday -The Rolling Stones #6 Dedicated To The One I Love -The Mamas & The Papas #8 There's A Kind Of Hush -Herman's Hermits #11 Strawberry Fields Forever -The Beatles #12 For What It's Worth (Stop, Hey What's That Sound) -The Buffalo Springfield #18 I Think We're Alone Now -Tommy James And The Shondells #23 Bernadette -Four Tops (to see the entire list of Billboard's Top 100 for this date: https://billboard.elpee.jp/hot100/wee...) That The Marvelettes were doing very well in this rarefied atmosphere of music legends has to speak to the fact that the group were still a popular live act and had a strong fan base. The group at this time were also being featured in many of the teen-oriented magazines and radio station newsletters, so they were receiving good press. So it would seem Smokey Robinson's instincts about what would work for the group were very good, to say the least. Included here is the mono/45 mix that was played on the radio and that the public was snapping up at record stores; also featured is the stereo mix that appeared on _ "The Pink Album."_ Interestingly, the mono mix album features an entirely different mix AND the addition of an extra verse that was cut at the suggestion of Quality Control. That is also included here. (There is yet another version/mix that appeared on the 1975 "Anthology" album. #motowngreatesthits #northernsoul #motown #motownmusic #motownrecords #themarvelettes #thehuntergetscapturedbythegame #womenofmotown
