ACL Rehab Exercise Guide | Phase 1 | Surgery Recovery [ Axe Rugby ]

ACL Rehab Phase 1. Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury and Rehab Phase 1 exercise takes place immediately after ACL surgery. Phase rehab refers to the need to pass 'Criteria' and not just wait for a length of time before progressing your rehab. Because time is a poor prognostic Indicator for success in ACL rehab. You need to be able to "DO" a lot of different things well and tick a bunch of specific boxes that are relevant to YOU. Depending on who you talk to there are 4-5 rehab phases and what you do within those phases are different. However The first phase is fairly well agreed upon and it is: Phase 1: The Recovery Phase 1. Decrease Pain and swelling: So that it looks like the other knee. 2. Regain knee extension / Flexion: (get the leg straight) & Get the knee Bending. 3. Regain Quads Function: The ability to perform straight leg raises well. Once these criteria have been met its possible to move onto the next phase. However some people will stay in the first phase or a variation of it until they are able to walk again and are allowed to weight-bear again. For these people it is important to do as much appropriate exercise as possible without contradicting their post op orders. So i have added some extra exercises into the video for this very reason! It is really important for each person to follow each of their own post op orders that they have received. Each ACL injury is different based on a multitude of factors. 1. the mechanism of injury 2. the injured patients goals 3. the surgeons ability 4. the technique used 5. the graft used 6. whether this is a first ACL or 2nd (or more) 7. extra injuries and how they are repaired 8. post op complications 9. post op orders/instructions (surgeons preferred) 10. rehab clinicians ability 11. patients time to do the rehab & quality of the rehab Common Mistakes In Early ACL rehab are, not letting the knee recover post op. So keep the swelling down, dont walk too much, listen to your post op orders. If you walk too much in the early stages you will lose time on the back end of the rehab. So get that knee to settle. Then build and exercise gradually. I want to stress for those that are still reading. That the perfect rehab / holy grail of ACL rehab does NOT exist (yet), but certainly phase rehab where you tick a bunch of specific boxes that are relevant to YOU and YOUR sport is key. Once again, there is no holy grail of how to do a rehab right just yet but there is certainly a WRONG way to do acl rehab.
