Lighting 101: Beverage Commercials

They always make the can or bottle appear as The One thing that’s going to satisfy our thirst! So how do they do it? How do they make a drink look so refreshing? Today on 4 Minute Film School, we are going to show you how to light and shoot a beverage commercial, by bringing you along as we shoot a fake commercial for La Croix... In this video, Valentina from the A-Team walks us through how she would shoot a commercial for La Croix. First, she picks a color scheme for the commercial. This is based on the color of the product itself and the color of material she has to work with. Next, she selects three different looks to feature in the commercial. These three looks are made to fit within the same theme, and show off the features of the product. Lastly, she uses lights to highlight the different elements of the product. Depending on the commercial, you will either have to limit the reflections, or embrace them. The main techniques used in this video are backgrounds, movement, and macro lenses. Backgrounds are whatever you have behind your product. This could be a solid color, or some kind of textured surface. Movement refers to the motion of a shot. This can be achieved with moving the camera forward [or side to side], or moving the product itself [such as a spinning display]. Macro lenses are lenses that have a very close minimum focus. This allows them to be able to focus on objects very close up, which is essential for shooting small objects. The great thing about beverage commercials, is that all you have to do is make the drink look good. If you can do that, through production design and these simple lighting tips, you can create commercials for all kinds of drinks! Just be sure to consider the type of drink it is and what would make sense for the commercial. Aside from that: have fun with it! Try a type of shot you’ve never done before.
