In the first part of this presentation, Dr.Viswanathan traces the modern history of the idea of Gender justice to the age of enlightenment,and shows how this idea spread to India during colonial times and influenced our society. Drawing on a landmark paper by Meera Nanda, it is argued that enlightenment rationalism/ scientific temper remains valid in the context of Gender justice even during post colonial period. It is reminded that , "as third world feminists,....we can't unambiguously join the post-modernist and nationalistic critics in bidding farewell to modernity and reason". Citing a contemporary Indian example, an attempt is made to demonstrate that such distrust of "western modernity" easily leads to reactionary nationalism which was always oppressive to women. In the second part, a few contemporary questions in this field are briefly addressed. It is argued that even as general acceptance of atheism by a society may not automatically guarantee an end to gender discrimination, an active attempt to question "tradition" is an important step towards this goal. Both rationalists/freethinkers and feminists share common concerns- even while emphases might vary- and therefore they both would benefit by understanding each other and walking together to their common goal of a post traditional society.
