NBC Network - Quinn Martin's Tales of the Unexpected -"The Nomads" (Complete Broadcast, 2/23/1977) 📺

Here's a complete first-run broadcast of an episode of Tales of the Unexpected - only not the late 1970's / early '80's syndicated (and British-produced) Roald Dahl anthology drama, but one fully titled Quinn Martin's Tales of the Unexpected (his production company did this one, after all) and which had a very short run, to say the least. This is one of the few QM Productions not to have Hank Simms handle opening title voiceovers for who starred in each episode (but he is heard near the end) - though Cannon's William Conrad was the narrator, and 'Act __' [surprisingly, Arabic rather than Roman numerals are used here] is shown at the start of each segment, and Ford vehicles are seen throughout. Oh, and this was one of the many flops that appeared in this period over the NBC Network, taped in this case in Boston, MA, via its then-NBC affiliate WBZ Channel 4 (now owned by, and affiliated with, CBS). This installment is titled "Nomads" (S01E04), and features guest stars David Birney (who this season starred in a short-lived TV series adaptation of Serpico in the title role), Eugene Roche, David Huddleston, Lynne Marta, Katherine Justice (who'd appeared in the very first Columbo installment in 1968, "Prescription: Murder"), and James Best (two years before landing the role of Sheriff Rosco Coltrane in The Dukes of Hazzard), and it is about a Vietnam veteran with a history of mental illness who learns of a plot by alien beings to take over the Earth, but (surprise, surprise!) no-one will believe him. (If this plot sounds familiar, it is - a reworking of "Beachhead," the pilot for the 1967-68 TV series The Invaders starring Roy Thinnes.) Includes: (kind of a washed-out picture, but rather typical for NBC at the time) 'We're 4 Boston' station ID Episode preview and opening titles (again, no voiceover, but actors' names and "Tonight's Episode" title are shown on screen) Commercials for: Sta-Puf Concentrated Fabric Softener (with Judith Ivey) Datsun 200-SX Episode "Act 1" Commercials for: Whirlpool Home Appliances (with eagle in flight) - "Endangered Species" (voiceover by Leslie Nielsen) New Datril 500 Extra-Strength pain reliever (with John Wayne) Episode "Act 2" Commercials for: AMC Gremlin (with legendary humorist Henry Morgan - not to be confused with Harry Morgan of Dragnet 1967-70 and M*A*S*H fame) Johnson's Baby Shampoo Series bumper Promo for The Rockford Files and Quincy for Friday Commercial: Hertz Rent-a-Car (with O.J. Simpson - one of his early ads for the company) (most unexpected) Station ID / "We're 4 Adventure" promo for "Ten Who Dared" for Thursday Sponsor billboard for All-Temperature Cheer (voiceover by Fred Facey) Episode "Act 3" Commercials for: All-Temperature Cheer (with two college roommates) Honda Civic Sedan (with radio DJ driving through snow) Episode "Act 4" Commercials for: Ivory Soap (with Eileen Roper of Alexandria, VA) (ending voiceover by Joel Crager) Gleem II toothpaste (with fluoride foam) Sponsor billboard for Gleem II (voiceover by Fred Facey) Preview for the next episode ("two weeks from tonight"), "A Hand for Sonny Blue" (voiceover by Hank Simms - finally!) Promo for Seventh Avenue for Thursday (voiceover by Wayne Howell?) Series ending credits (with voiceover promo for Quincy by Mel Brandt) Promo for "In the Glitter Palace" for Sunday (with Chad Everett, following the end of Medical Center) (voiceover by Wayne Howell?) - "To hide her homosexuality, must she plead guilty to murder?" Preview for Eyewitness News at 11pm with Tony Pepper and Jack Williams (recording ends just as preview is about to) This aired on local Boston TV on Wednesday, February 23rd 1977 during the 10:00pm to 10:59pm (Eastern) timeframe. This footage was donated to The Museum of Classic Chicago Television as part of The Steve Albert Collection. About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television: The MCCTv (FuzzyMemoriesTV) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit whose primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s to early 80s, mostly) recorded off of TV (in Chicago or other cities now too); things which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. If you have any old 1970s videotapes recorded off of TV please email: [email protected] Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical preservation.
