Mesh Computers: Charlton wore shirts with the new sponsor’s name for the first time. Charlton arranged a one-off deal with Mesh for the Wembley match and received a £25,000 payment. Excelsior Hotel (Heathrow): Charlton stayed at the Excelsior Hotel on eve of match. After the match, the management and players and other guests attended a banquet at the hotel. Freedom of Greenwich: The following evening, Greenwich Council honoured the players of Charlton Athletic by holding a civic reception at Woolwich Town Hall. This reception was planned to take place irrespective of the result at Wembley. The players, management and staff departed from The Valley at 6 p.m. and made the short journey to the Town Hall by open topped bus. The route was Charlton Church Lane, Charlton Village, Charlton Park Lane, along Little Heath and Hillreach into Artillery Place then onto the Town Hall in Wellingston Street, which was closed to traffic. The Freedom of Greenwich was bestowed on the players and a buffet followed. Approximately 30,000 fans either lined the route and/or were at the Town Hall.
