Baisakhi, also known as Vaisakhi, is an important festival celebrated in the northern Indian state of Punjab and other parts of the country. It falls on April 13th or 14th every year and marks the beginning of the new solar year and the harvest season. It is an important day for the Sikh community as it marks the founding of the Khalsa Panth by the tenth sikh guru, Shri Guru Gobind Singh in March 1699. It marks the first day of the Sikh new year. For many Hindu communities, the festival is an occasion to ritually bathe in sacred rivers such as Ganga, Jhelum, and Kaveri, visit temples, meet friends, take part in other festivities, and perform a mandatory daan (charity) especially of hand fans, water pitchers and seasonal fruits. Baisakhi festival is very popular in different regions with different names like Bihar its called Vaisakha, in West Bengal known as “Poila Baisakh”, Naba Barsha" or “Bengali New Year”. In Tamil Nadu it is celebrated as Puthandu and in Assam its known as Rangoli Bihu. Apart from its religious significance, Baisakhi is also an agricultural festival that marks the beginning of the harvest season for farmers. This festival is dedicated to all the farmers who work hard to provide food to all the citizens of India . Baisakhi is an occasion of tremendous joy and festivity for farmers.
