TunePlay - MIKE POST: CLASSIC TV THEMES

There's a strange musical magic or creative alchemy separating "good" film & TV compositions from those which famously become part of the pop culture lexicon: that certain "something" singling out a song like "Goldfinger", "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" or "Shaft", as well as instrumentals such as the CHARIOTS OF FIRE, JAMES BOND or STAR WARS themes from the rest of the pack. It's certainly (partially) a "lightning strike" synchronicity of composer sensibility combined with the subject of the film or show and the zeitgeist of the era. Hey, a few years earlier or later and John Williams' STAR WARS could have been the worst of musical anachronisms. But when a composer "strikes lightning" again, again and again there's something more at work than a fortuitous alignment of artistic "planets". We don't have the answers to that one. But we somehow suspect Mike Post does. One probably has to be "over 30" to appreciate the genius of Mike Post. Creator of some of the most iconic themes in television history (HILL STREET BLUES, THE ROCKFORD FILES, MAGNUM P.I., LAW & ORDER, QUANTUM LEAP, WISEGUY, HUNTER, NEWS RADIO, WHITE SHADOW, THE A-TEAM, DOOGIE HOWSER M.D., THE COMMISH, CHiPS, SILK STALKINGS and many more), the popularity of his prodigious creative output - in the form of tunes whistled on the lips and downloaded as the ring tones of an entire generation, is nothing short of staggering. Winning his first Grammy at age 23 for arrangements on Mason Williams' "Classical Gas", he'd also be responsible for instrumentals on the lps of Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin and Sonny & Cher; and produce the first three albums of Kenny Rogers' early group "The First Edition" (1967 - '69) before segueing into television in the early 1970s as musical director of THE ANDY WILLIAMS SHOW then composer of the theme to ABC's popular crime drama series TOMA. TOMA was for producer Stephen J. Cannell, with whom Post would form a 20 year + creative partnership; an artistic marriage off to a rousing start with his next theme - the Top 40s pop breakthrough hit "Theme to THE ROCKFORD FILES" for Cannell's now classic detective series starring James Garner. His string of popular tunes for Cannell productions (many of them cracking the Billboard music charts) would continue with BAA BAA BLACK SHEEP, THE GREATEST AMERICAN HERO, THE A-TEAM, HARDCASTLE AND McCORMICK, HUNTER, RIPTIDE, THE COMMISH and others. And as if that weren't enough, during this time he'd also manage to squeeze in producing gigs on the albums of Van Halen, Peter Allen and Dolly Parton (her award winning "9 to 5 And Odd Jobs"), and in the process chalk up an astounding 20 BMI Awards (winning EVERY year from 1987 - 2009 ... with the exception of 1991), 6 EMMY nominations (winning in 1996 for MURDER ONE), and four Grammy nomination nods. When asked to posit an explanation for his success as well as offer advice to aspiring composers, Post, in a well regarded 2005 interview, wryly stated: "Look at the picture. A lot of guys make the mistake of going, 'This is what I feel'. Look at the picture. (It's) your art on somebody else's art. They already did their art. Look at the picture. By the way, did I say 'look at the picture?'". For us, the beneficiaries of his craft, "look ... AND LISTEN" to a master at work.
