Halley's Comet - Billie Eilish (cover)

hello again :) this song is another one of those ones that i have always wanted to cover, and i'm so happy i got around to recording it. i will say, mixing it was a paaaaaaiiiiin in the ass because my voice and the piano pretty much overlap in the low mid frequencies, so making both sound good and not having one sound thin or weird cause i'm scooping out so much from the low mids was a challenge. but i'm happy with where it ended up. i was also playing and singing at the same time which was hard lol. i don't think the chords are 100% accurate to the original, especially in the end bit, but i was mainly just going off of memory cause i feel like a lot of tutorial videos and stuff always end up sounding a little off from the studio version. i also just like to challenge my brain and see if i can pull the chords out of thin air. i'm also a fan of the piano sound i was able to get. i don't have an acoustic piano (unfortunately) so i used a plugin called "sampletank 4" that i got with pro tools and used the berlin grand piano. i recorded the midi alongside my voice with just the piano coming out of my monitors so there'd be a little bit of bleed like an actual piano. then once i got the take i wanted, i set up my mic in front of my left monitor and recorded the sound of just the midi playing out of it, and then did the same for the right and panned them hard left and right. then i blended in the midi piano somewhere around 60 L and R to fill it out a bit more. those two things mixed with the bleed and the sound of me pressing on the keys coming through the vocal track - i think - really made it sound more like a stereo mic'ed acoustic piano. sorry to nerd out at the end here, but if you bothered to read this far then i imagine it was some what interesting lol. hope you enjoy :) insta & tiktok: @ryanthegardner
