Going to the Source | William Strachey's Account of a Powhatan Battle Reenactment

We join Brian once again for our continuing Going to the Source series. In this video, Brian examines an account from William Strachey, the Virginia Company secretary serving in the Colony, in which he describes the Powhatan conducting a mock battle for the English in the native town of Mattapanient. Strachey was one of the survivors of the Sea Venture, shipwrecked on Bermuda in 1609. He arrived in Virginia in spring 1610 along with the other survivors on the ships Patience and Deliverance and served as the Virginia Company secretary in the Colony from 1610 to 1612. He wrote of his experiences in Virginia about 1612 in the volume "The History of Travel into Virginia Britannia..." though the Virginia Company did not publish it, and it would remain unpublished until 1849. A copy of Strachey's "The History of Travel into Virginia Britannia..." can be found in the book Jamestown Narratives, Eyewitness Accounts of the Virginia Colony, Edited by Edward Wright Haile which is available from the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation's online gift shop at https://www.shopjyf.com/store/20759%2...
