It’s hard to conceptualize joy when we think about war. Yet people caught in conflict find a way to stay rooted, to cultivate resilience, to celebrate life, and create happy times. In the Somali capital Mogadishu, one photo studio became a space where many found renewal, joy, and time to break away from the brutal civil war. Abdi was born in Kenya but grew up in Mogadishu during the formative years of his life. He will use the experience of living and studying in a war-torn city to take about how people cultivate resilience and create moments of joy. He will specifically be talking about Sahafi studio, where he and his family used to go in the weekends to take photos. Abdi Latif Dahir is a journalist covering eastern Africa for Quartz, a New York-headquartered digital media outlet that’s a guide to the new global economy. Abdi was born in Kenya but grew up in Mogadishu during the formative years of his life. He will use the experience of living and studying in a war-torn city to take about how people cultivate resilience and create happy times.
