The Whitworth institute and park are steeped in Victorian industrial history. Lady Louisa Whitworth, wife of the industrialist Sir Joseph Whitworth, had a vision of creating a place where people could meet for leisure, recreational and educational purposes. The Whitworth is unique in that it is the only surviving Whitworth foundation that continues to operate under the terms of its original endowment. Whitworth Park is a private park, open to the public 365 days a year. The park contains several ponds, an ornamental lake and a wide variety of trees as well as various planted areas all nestled within 10 acres of mature parkland. Threaded by wide paved paths, the park is accessible for wheelchairs, pushchairs and mobility scooters.
