They’re just too young. Most babies don't develop the ability to learn to self-settle themselves to sleep until 5/6 months. Specific Tips to Help Your Baby Nap: Tip 1: Stick to recommended awake times of 1-2 hours For a baby of 2-3 months, stick to your recommended awake times of every 1-2 hours. Tip 2: Watch baby for sleepy signs Let’s say your baby wakes up from his nap at 12 o’clock. By the time the clock reaches 1pm, I would casually be watching for sleepy signs. Any time between that 1-2 hours of waking, any time that he shows me sleepy signs, I’m going to get him ready for his nap. I’ll take him into his room, do a little nap routine and give him these familiar cues to let him know it’s time to nap. Sleepy signs: • A subtle sign - his activity just slows down. He’s looking away, staring off in space. • Your baby just wants to nurse or wants the pacifier. • If they get fussy or start to whine a bit. • Rubbing eyes • Dark, puffy or red eyes Tip 3: Decrease stimulation to limit distraction Decrease distractions - any excitement, noises or people that will rev them up. Tip 4: Start a calming routine (naps and bedtime) • Darkened bedroom • White Noise • No mobiles or projectors – too exciting • Think minimal distractions – a womb-like environment Start a calming pre-nap routine: Take him in his room, change his diaper, feed him, read a book or sing a lullaby. Then turn out the lights. Tip 5: Use a sleep sack For a baby this age, I’d recommend a specialist sleepsack like the Love to Dream, the Woombie or the Zipadee Zip. If your little guy is used to being held to fall asleep or sleep in a co-sleeper, he’s used to a cosy environment. Use that to your advantage. You could even get the Merlin Magic Sleep Suit. This is a sleepsuit you can only use for a short space of time, a few months – but it’s really magical! You do have to stop using it when your baby shows signs of starting to roll. For some babies, that could be 4 months. For others, it could be 7 months. It’s hard to tell. Your guy is 2-3 months. Is he super energetic and moving a lot? Is he strong? Did he hold his head up at an early age or look around during tummy time? If so, he’ll probably roll early, so I wouldn’t get the Merlin Magic Sleep Suit. If he’s not showing signs that he might roll soon then I would get it. Tip 6: Stay consistent to see results! Stay super consistent. Make sure you do your Peaceful Nightly Ritual every night and have a consistent bedtime. In my Exhausted Mom’s Survival Kit, I walk you through what bedtime should be depending on your child’s age and developmental phase. If you’re super consistent with bedtime and your Peaceful Nightly Ritual, you’ve got a sleep space that’s conducive to sleep, then the majority of babies respond really well to that. Tip 7: If this doesn’t work, use sleep props! If you’ve tried all my tips and they help a bit but not that much, and he’s still not napping well after 2 weeks, it’s totally fine to use some sleep props until he turns 6 months. Use motion. You can use a swing or a vibrating chair. I still recommend you follow all of the above tips too. Follow awake times. Have baby nap in his darkened bedroom with white noise going – just put the swing in his bedroom. Make sure you supervise the nap with your video monitor and you go in the room frequently to check on him. We have to work with who your baby is. Your unique baby, and also, his age. It’s okay to utilize motion naps when you’ve done your best and your baby still isn’t napping well.
