The True Angels of Dien Bien Phu

The French military fortress at Dien Bien Phu, Vietnam, fell to the Communist Viet Minh on May 7, 1954, effectively ending French Colonialization of Southeast Asia and the First Indochina War. One of the more compelling stories to come from that battle was the French 'Angel of Dien Bien Phu' Geneviève de Galard who was the sole French nurse who cared for wounded and dying Frenchmen. But Galard was neither the only woman nor the only nurse, nor the only Angel giving medical aid to dying men. The French fort, like other French military bases, housed not one but two “military field brothels” — French army-maintained bordellos called BMCs - that at the fall of the fort had seven Vietnamese and eleven Algerian women who worked as sanctioned prostitutes. It is unknown how many were working when the Dien Bien Phu siege started. As the Dien Bien Phu siege began, however, the women refused evacuation and were given a crash course in medical training, and served admirably as nurses under the worst conditions until the fort fell to a Viet Minh onslaught.
