SUBSCRIBE Learn how tile the right way Tile layout, most important first step to installing a floor.When you install a ceramic , porcelain or marble tile on a floor, one of the first things that needs to be done is to determine how square a room is, which walls are parallel, which walls are square and which are out of square. The reason to do this is so you will get even and consistent cuts along a wall, and you don't end up with wedge type cuts that turn into slivers. From my experience, no room is ever built perfectly square, there is always at least one wall that is out of square and in older homes rooms are usually pretty far out of square. In this video I show how to layout and Square Off a big kitchen floor with lots of obstacles and corners and areas to consider. A laser square will be a huge help, and make it a lot easier to figure out what every single cut will be. Knowing how the walls are oriented to each other and doing proper tile layout will prevent unexpected unsightly wedge cuts. One of the worst mistakes that can be made is to assume that a wall is square to another, start with a full cut and then to find that the wall is out of square and you start to get an increasing distance between the wall and the tile and end up with small wedge tile cuts to fill the gap. Squaring off a room is an essential part of the tile layout process, as is measuring and knowing what every cut tile size will be before a single tile is set. You have to find where to but your very first tile, once you start setting tile, there is no changing of the layout and adjusting what the cuts will be.
