Free & Paul Rodgers - "Guardian of the Universe" - rehearsal by Paul Rodgers

Paul Rodgers (audio only) from the band 'Free', rehearsing alone in the studio during a Free recording session, plays the Free song "Guardian of the Universe". PR wrote this for his then un-born son. Merely a practice run-through of the song, he coughs and clears his throat, and plays it fairly low-key in parts without putting maximum effort into it. Such an effort would probably be deleted by most engineers, but they recognised that his voice here is simply stunning and they very sensibly kept it. Here he accompanies himself on the keyboards (organ), and none of the other band members are evident. At the end he tells the engineer " I fluffed it in a few places". It seems that the engineer (off microphone) says something like "Do you want to try it again", or "Do you want to wait for the others", because he then says "Well they'll be back again in a minute so we may as well ... (wait?)". The band version of this song appears on their final album "Free At Last", and is played on piano, in lieu of the organ here, plus lead guitar and a slightly upbeat drum and bass accompaniement. This version is from the Free 5 CD box set "Free: Songs of Yesterday". The box set includes a few other such oddities, such as Paul Rodgers on holiday in Jamaica, in May 1972 just after Free had re-formed, playing a superb reggae song (written by Paul), "(I Just Wanna) See You Smile", recorded with the legendary reggae band 'The Maytals'. I compiled the video myself utilising footage downloaded from YouTube, occasionally with some of my own added effects and filters. My plan here is to make available a few of my favourite recordings not easily available elsewhere. Please check out my other videos. Comments are always welcomed.
