Turtle Mountain (Frank Slide) - Crowsnest Pass - Alberta, Canada

2020-06-10 - Turtle Mountain This famous, or rather infamous, mountain is most known for being the source of the rock slide that buried the town of Frank in April 1903. True to its reputation this mountain is still crumbling and breaking apart which is why its movement is constantly being monitored for future potential slides. Turtle has some personal significance to me in that it was the very first mountain I climbed at the ripe, young age of 15 as part of a church youth group. I also climbed it with my son when he was 14 and my daughter when she was 15. True to this pattern, when we climbed it this day we saw lots of happy hiking-type Moms and Dads and plenty of disgruntled looking kids. haha The trailhead is right off the most southern street in Blairmore, AB and on the border of the Livingstone Public Land Use Zone or PLUZ. It starts with vigorous elevation gain and then continues through trees and good slabs of hard rock. Once out of the tree line the route to the N. Peak is straightforward. The trickiest part is the route finding required between the North Peak and the South Peak (true summit). A number of paths are evident and trodden but some of these take one directly into massive crevasses that, if filled with snow, could make for a twisted ankle or broken bone. One path to avoid these crevasses loses way, way too much elevation and leaves the hiker with an arduous slog up to the peak. The best path is on the left and is closest to the edge of the connecting ridge. There can be an airy feeling of exposure on this route but nothing to worry about. As Kane warns there is a lot of overhanging and unstable rock here so be careful not to tred too close to the edge. References: Alan Kane. (2016). "Scrambles in the Canadian Rockies". 3rd Edition.
