POLICE SUMMONS AMOLATAR LC V The Lango District leaders under their umbrella of Lango District Chairpersons and Mayor’s Forum have called upon security to stop harassing elected leaders speaking against unjust treatment. This emerged after the LC 5 chairperson Amolatar district was summoned by police over a public statement he made regarding the alleged killing of fishermen by soldiers in lake Kyoga. AMBIENCE Geoffrey Ocen, the LC V chairperson Amolatar in the company of his UPC Party President Jimmy Akena and colleague district chairpersons were temporarily blocked by police in Amolatar from accessing the police station. Police claimed the number was to big for a statement recording. After a few minutes of negotiation with the OC station Kenneth Massete, the district chairperson was allowed in with a few members while other leaders were asked to wait outside. Ocen was responding to the police summon for a statement he made on the forth of this month accusing the army under Fishery Protection Unit in Amolatar for the continued killing of civilians in the lake. Ambience After the statement recording the team led by Jimmy Akena moved to Pangani A Village, Kigondo parish, Namasale sub country. Here the family has lost three children. Sarah says her first born was killed in the lake, another child was again murdered in 2019 and on March 2nd this year another son was discovered in the lake with a broken neck. Sarah’s Husband was also arrested and jailed leaving her with seven children to take care. According to the district at least 36 have lost their lives in the operations carried out in the lake. Ocen says majority of people are suffering quietly because of fear and harassment by the army. Namasale Sub county chairson wants God to dry the lake for bloodshed to stop. Ongu has lost 17 people in his sub county. Issue of the killings in the lake has been a constant out cry especially by the leaders around the fishing communities. Last week, while in Dokolo campaigning for his NRM flag bearer, this matter was raised and President Museveni pledged to return around May to handle the issue of brutal killings in the lakes. Leaders now request for his immediate intervention into the matter. The district chairpersons also plan to hold an emergency meeting to make pronouncements and resolutions on the same.
