Lafayette HS Marching Band Les Mis 1994

This is the Lafayette HS Marching Band of Lexington, KY, J. Steven Moore and Terry Magee, directors. The 1994 show featuring music from the musical Les Miserables (David Henderson, arranger), was one of the most popular during Moore's tenure as director. The genesis of the show was in 1991, when Lafayette performed in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and later enjoyed the musical on Broadway. To begin the 1994 band camp week, the students loaded up on 5 buses and traveled to Nashville, TN to see the musical. With that professional and emotional inspiration, the year was sure to be stunning. After a 2nd place finish to an incredible McGavock HS band at the Vanderbilt show, changes were made to reduce the singing and increase the woodwind exposure. Other than that, the students doubled down on their already terrific discipline to execute the show to perfection. Eventually, the students earned their 5th straight Grand Championship at the MTSU Contest of Champions and 5th Kentucky State Championship. It should be noted that the Contest of Champions was extremely close and that the McGavock HS Band (Jeff Beckman and Nola Jones, Directors) was incredible and quite deserving of the Tennessee Governor's Cup. You will notice NO electronics in the show. The students enjoyed the "slow motion" movement, inspired the same in the musical, and it was used effectively in two locations. The signature "LAFAYETTE" spell out twist for 94 was to transition from LES MIS to LAFAYETTE using the aforementioned "slow motion" movement. The show begins with another signature from this era: a specially designed entrance to the field ("walk-on") that highlighted the members PRECISION MARCHING FUNDAMENTALS.
