Firstly, we took a bus for about 1 hour and 10 minutes from Salzburg, to Bad Ischl train station. From there we had about a 30 minute wait and then boarded the train which took about 40 minutes or so to Hallstatt. When the train drops you off, you must buy a ferry ticket at 2.5 Euro per person to cross the lake and get to Hallstatt. The boat takes approx. 10 minutes to cross. You can spend as little as one hour there or spend the night. It is up to you. I recommend to rent a small electric boat for 13-15 euro per 30 minutes and see the lake and the town on your own. There are several restaurants with fresh fish. I recommend the trout and a mixed dark and light beer. There are several viewpoints for great photos, just hike upwards. The salt mine was supposed to be awesome, but we had to skip it for time constraints. Very worth a visit if you can make it happen!
