Around 1870, Franz Liszt edited several piano works by Franz Schubert for the Stuttgart-based publishing house Cotta. Even though the two composers never met, they both studied composition with Antonio Salieri in Vienna. Liszt remained a great admirer of Schubert all his life, having contributed enormously to raise the popularity of the Viennese composer's music. In spite of Liszt's deep respect for Schubert's style, his approach to editing could seem somewhat "intrusive" for modern standards. In his edition of the Impromptus Op. 90 D 899, numbers 2 and 3 present so many additions to Schubert's original text that they were listed as Liszt's own works on Searle's catalogue.
