This gallery edition commemorates 30 years of this classic. This is my first artist edition, and honestly to pay US$175 is a bit much but this is one I have made an exception for as it is a classic. The reason it is so big is because the idea is to reproduce the original comic book art as originally drawn on the board. This is exactly the size the artist Frank Miller used. As you can see, the feverish imagination and kinetic lines of Frank Miller really come through. This is a raw take on the book as you can see what Frank was going through in his mind. This cover for the first issue features an overlay that shows Frank's rough draft of the cover. Flipping through you see erasure marks, notations, white outs, reproduced from the original comic book art except for 20% of the book. There is one particular page I am interested in, and it is this one in the third issue which auctioned for close to half a million dollars! So spending US$175 for a reproduction is for sure a better deal than paying half a million... Scattered throughout we also see translucent overlays that show Frank Miller's re-inked panels over Klaus Janson's inks so part of the fun of a book like this is you get to see some of this creative tension at play. So at the end of the book we have a double sided poster of Batman and we also have additional miscellaneous covers and artwork by Frank Miller, followed by biographies of both Frank and Klaus. One thing I want to point out is the binding which lets the book open flat which is cool as it feels like combing through a portfolio. I hope you enjoyed this glimpse into what is the biggest comic book collectible I have ever owned but I reckon it is worth it as it is Batman The Dark Knight Returns.
