Psalm 58 Explained - Justice is in God's Hands

Psalm 58 is a miktam, which means to "engrave" in Hebrew. David wrote this Psalm to engrave in his heart and mind the truths about the Lord God and how God deals with injustice concerning the righteous man who suffers under the wicked. Notice that in Psalm 58:1, David addresses this Psalm to the "rulers" who neither speak justly nor judge people with equity. Because of their sin and lies, they are estranged from the Lord. David writes that "The righteous will be glad when they are avenged, when they dip their feet in the blood of the wicked." (Psalm 58:10) In other words, David reminds us that the righteous will be avenged and rewarded by the Lord who judges all the earth (Psalm 58:11) Notice that David also applied this very principle when he refused to kill King Saul, the Lord's anointed, but choose to let God deal with him. David says: “The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed, or lay my hand on him; for he is the anointed of the Lord.” With these words David sharply rebuked his men and did not allow them to attack Saul. (1 Samuel 24:7-8) Therefore, David said to Saul: "May the Lord avenge the wrongs you have done to me, but my hand will not touch you." (1 Samuel 24:12) Ray Crocker is the Senior Pastor at Heritage Baptist Church Singapore. He was formerly a missionary to South Korea before his calling to be a baptist pastor in Singapore.
