Lǎo Zǐ atau Lao Tzu merupakan ahli filsafat yang terpopuler dan juga merupakan pendiri Taoisme kini. Pada waktu keruntuhan Dinasti Zhou, Lǎo Zǐ meletakkan jabatan dan meninggalkan negerinya dengan koaknya. Ketika ia tiba di Kastam Hangu (函谷关), Guan Yixi (关尹喜) memintanya meninggalkan filsafat dalam bentuk tulisan. Atas permintaan ini, ia menciptakan dua karya yang berjudul Dao dan De sebelum meninggalkan Chuguo. Kedua kitab tersebut digabungkan dan diperkenalkan sebagai Daode Jing yang berisikan 5000 huruf Tionghua dalam 81 bab.
