During the Inaugural Parade, the Obamas hopped out of their armored limousine (a.k.a. "the Beast") and walked part of the way back home. The couple returned to the White House for the start of their 2nd term, to the delight of thousands of people who greeted them along the street and in the buildings above. The tradition to walk along part of the parade route was begun over 30 years ago by President Carter and is both a show of the strength of American democracy and, given today's modern security concerns, a moment of high tension as the isolated couple moves, covered by a blanket of secret service agents, surrounded by dozens of armored vehicles, miles of fencing and barriers and thousands of additional law enforcement personnel scattered throughout the nation's capital, Washington, DC.
