The Farm - Origin Story of the Stephen Gaskin Family Farm - 1975

In 1975, Dean and Dudley Evenson were living in Florida where they had videotaped the home birth of their second daughter in their half-size school bus. As the weather warmed, they headed north and west and decided to visit ‘The Farm’ founded by Stephen Gaskin in central Tennessee. Stephen’s wife, Ina May Gaskin, was well-known for her advocacy of natural home birth and had written a book called ‘Spiritual Midwifery.’ She spearheaded a natural childbirth movement on The Farm and that extended far beyond its borders. Many women would come to The Farm specifically to have their babies in the beautiful, spiritual way offered there. Dean and Dudley had first heard about Stephen Gaskin when they lived in San Francisco five years earlier. In the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, Gaskin was leading a weekly meeting called Monday Night Class where he would expound on the ancient wisdom that was being dusted off and re-examined to reveal spiritual and practical truths relevant to the changing times. He eventually gathered a group of hundreds of young free thinkers around him and together they left the Bay area in a caravan of about 80 buses and headed east to Tennessee where they bought land and put down roots. They called their self-sustaining homestead ‘The Farm’ and it continues to this day as an extended family of friends who have been living together in community since 1971. When Dean and Dudley and their young daughters arrived at The Farm, they were welcomed and told where to park their bus for the night. After nestling into a cozy camping spot, they connected up with the Farm group that was involved with portable video and there was an instant comradery. They found that The Farm folks also had a visionary approach to using portable video media for social change. The community was also very practical and grew as much of its food as possible. They were especially enthusiastic about soybeans, grew their own, and made all sorts of food from the beans, including soy ice cream. All the people at The Farm were hard workers and the children seemed healthy, mature, and free spirited. Truly an inspiration. https://thefarmcommunity.com/ ----------------------- Thank you for subscribing to SOUNDINGS MINDFUL MEDIA:    / soundingsmindfulmedia   Listen to Soundings on all streaming platforms and check out our latest multi-media releases: https://Soundings.com https://linktr.ee/SoundingsofthePlanet Follow Soundings of the Planet & Dean Evenson: --YouTube: (Soundings of the Planet)    / soundingsoftheplanet   --Facebook: (Soundings of the Planet)   / soundingsoftheplanet   --Facebook: (Dean Evenson)   / dean.evenson.3   --Instagram: (Soundings of the Planet)   / soundingsoftheplanet   --Instagram: (Dean Evenson)   / dean.evenson   Video by Dean & Dudley Evenson
